Time to rezone

Updated: Nov 20, 2018

We live our professional and private lives dynamically, sometimes within and sometimes shifting between three zones. When satisfied with the status quo, we are in our comfort zone. This is indeed comfortable but can cause dissatisfaction and an elusive feeling of emptiness if we never move beyond it because

"A ship in harbour may be safe but that is not what ships are built for."

When seeking to forge ahead, to challenge ourselves and set new goals, we move into our stretch zone. This is also the zone where we will feel most fulfilled and be happiest, since it is where we can achieve most, but as it is not a static zone, we are constantly moving.

If we overstretch ourselves, we move into the stress zone. Here, we have taken on more than we can handle and it is time to slow down. At this stage, it is often necessary to move back into our comfort zone in order to regain equilibrium.

The more we stretch ourselves the larger our comfort zone becomes and the smaller our stress zone, as we become accustomed to behaviours that were once difficult for us. We call this growth.
